UXR is evolving rapidly, but its growth comes with challenges. Some industries have thrived, while others have faced layoffs and restructures. Discussions about trends and obstacles are everywhere, but where do we really stand?

At UXinsight, we aimed to cut through the noise and take a closer look at the current state of UXR. What’s working? What’s not? And what do researchers expect from the year ahead?

That’s why we launched the UXR Maturity Benchmark 2024—to capture the current practice and help the community navigate the future.

About the study

455 UX research professionals participated in the survey.

Survey design and distribution

The UXR Maturity Benchmark 2024 study was conducted through an online survey designed to assess the state of user research practices across different industries and organisational contexts. Below, we outline the key methodological aspects of the study.

The survey consisted of 36 questions, primarily multiple-choice, to facilitate structured responses while allowing for some qualitative insights where necessary. To ensure participant privacy, all responses were anonymised.

The survey was made available in three languages: English, French, and Spanish, to maximize accessibility and inclusivity. It was distributed through multiple channels, leveraging the networks of UXinsight, Norstat, and TestingTime. These distribution channels included newsletters, LinkedIn outreach, and local professional communities focused on UX research.

The UXR Maturity Framework

The UXinsight framework consists of six different sections:

  1. Buy-in and Resources
  2. UXR strategy
  3. Methods and Operations
  4. Standards and Compliance
  5. Capacity building
  6. Impact of research

Each section is subdivided into different factors that play a part in UXR maturity.  In this benchmark, we focused on 20 of them.

Maturity levels

For each of the factors in our framework we identified four levels*  of maturity:

  1. Emerging  – UXR is in its early stages, often informal and inconsistent.
  2. Developing  – UXR is becoming more structured, with some dedicated researchers or team members conducting studies.
  3. Established – UXR is a recognised and integral part of the organisation’s processes.
  4. Pioneering – UXR is deeply embedded and drives strategic decision-making at all levels.

🔎 In reality there are five levels, with the first being non existent. Organisations that don’t do any UXR yet are not considered in this study.

Sample and Respondent Breakdown

A total of 455 participants completed the survey.

Region – The majority of respondents are based in Germany (13%), the Netherlands (11%), France (10%), Poland (8%), and the UK (7%), with others spread across the continent. Additionally, 10,8% of respondents are from the US and 7,7% from other regions worldwide.

Industry – Technology and Innovation (40,4%), Consumer-Oriented Industries (21,5%), Financial and Professional Services (14,9%), Public and Social Sectors (11,4%), Infrastructure, Manufacturing, Energy, and Environmental (7,5%), Healthcare and Life Sciences (4,2%).

Organisation size – Very Large Enterprises (22,9%), Large Enterprises (29,7%), Mid-Size Large Enterprises (25,7), Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs)(21,7%).
